Rain! Soggy goldfish are no fun to eat. We were overreacting, though. It was sprinkling. Nonetheless, we hurried off to the goldfish pile very quickly. By the time we got to the pile, everyone knew the story. It was our luck that Packbat was not there. But a sight did meet our eyes.

The babies were having a goldfish fight! Did I mention that the rain stopped?

Fortunately for everyone, Samuel and Harlan had hurried after us. They certainly weren't pleased with the goldfish fight. Harlan knew what to do about the goldfish. By now they weren't going to be any good to eat. "We should make more goldfish," he said. Why hadn't we thought of that?

At the Hazelnuts' house, which was where you meet up to do important things, Samuel and Harlan cooked goldfish. When Luke wandered into the kitchen, he noticed that it was very smoky. "Why all the smoke?" he asked.

"We're going to give Packbat a batch of burned goldfish. We forgot all the salt in them anyway," Samuel said.

At the treehouse, we had a picnic of: Goldfish!

"I vote we should receive the Goldfish Medal of Honor!" Shane said.

"What's that?" the practical Lyra asked.

"I don't know," said Shane, "but I think we ought to receive it anyway."

"We need to ask the permission of the goldfish to receive this award," I added.

"Goldfish, can we receive the Goldfish Medal of Honor?" Dominic asked.

Several seconds of silence followed. Then everybody laughed.
