Halloween Tricks

The Hazelnut Chipmunks had just finished up breakfast and were just getting up from the table when they heard a knock at the door. John went to open it, but no one was there. It was probably just one of the kids playing a trick.

As it turned out, there was more strange activity in Calico Village that day. Several critters reported hearing knocks when no one was at the door. And at the treat stand, Laura Toy Poodle saw a ghost, somehow floating in thin air. It seemed like just a ghost decoration, but the floating threw everyone off. It was very odd. None of Calico Village knew what was going on, but there were many speculations. It was not Packbat; he was at his swamp when Laura spotted the ghost, nor Gatorpossum, who was chasing his tail, though he meant to be chasing something else, according to my brother.

Though Packbat was apparently not affiliated with the ghost, I still thought that Critter Guard should check it out. After all, you never can tell with Packbats.

Unfortunately for my idea, Shane Sandy was the only one who could come. His sister was having a sleepover, Patrick Border had a headache, and Dominic was going to the treehouse. John Hazelnut did suggest that we take the Sky Ride Adventure, and we gladly accepted his offer. After all, the only thing we could do was circle around Calico Village hoping to catch up with the ghost, and going by air would make our task easier. Shane also pulled out two dark blue cloaks, to help us hide. We started at the sunset, when the clouds were making everything look orange.

We circled above Calico Village for a while, before we saw something glowing and landed. It was the ghost, and, now that is was nighttime, it was not only floating but glowing, or rather, shining. I was very thankful for the cloak, as I would have been cold otherwise.

It was the ghost, at last, floating before our very eyes. And what could we do about it? Neither of us knew. We could go up and grab it, but that wouldn't help us find out what or who was behind it.

Then the answer came to me. We would wait. Whoever was out must have been off the ground, and they very well might be cold. Our waiting paid off in a minute. I heard a giggle. I looked up at the tree.

"Knock it off, Buster Slydale. And you too Dominic Hazelnut!"

I finished telling the story to the babies.

"I knew that Buster couldn't possibly have climbed up the trees himself." If I didn't already mention it, Buster and Dominic controlled the ghost from a tree. It was hung up with wires. "And Dominic is the best tree climber in Sylvania! If we ever need a Packbat defense weapon, we can get some of Buster's help."

"Are you quite sure he wouldn't play a trick on you?" Luke asked.

I smiled. "We'll be careful."
